I would like to re-tile my fireplace: tile over tile, any helpful suggestions?

I have ceramic tiles all around my fireplace and on a 2x4 allocate on the floor below. I want to re-tile it. Removing the old tile and mortar seems very time consuming. Can I just tile over tile.

I m remorseful rottie mom but don t give advice on what you don t know. I don t mean any offense but I ve done tile for 20 years and yes is can be done. It is done all the time.
